WAITING FOR LINCOLN

A bronzed, lank man! His suit of ancient black,
A famous high top-hat and plain worn shawl
Make him the quaint great figure that men love,
The prairie-lawyer, master of us all.
- Vachel Lindsay

Ever hungry for
rejection I submitted
another op-ed to the NYT,

castigating the “Silent Men,”
the Trump enablers, the
conspirators, the snivelers,
the bought off, the yellow bellies,
the amoral, the immoral,

imploring them to stand up,
insisting on integrity,
urging reboots of their inner GPS,
asking of the whole pack
a single simple question:

“Where is your Lincoln?”

I received my answer, which didn’t
come in the mail or bing into my
In-box.

From the Times? Nothing.
From the cabal of cowards: Silence

and what, pray tell, from Lincoln?

Beloved by his countryman,

he arrived right on time,

December 9, 2017,

8 pm,

my grandson,

Lincoln Pierce Schechter.
