PLAINS SIGHT

The side-view mirror suggests
that the red sky was behind me,
like a bombardment on a battle-
field of the war that never ends,
and that I was fleeing down the
length of Illinois back to Chicago.
But actually peace was coming
to the Mid-West, the farms were
folding up for the night, and the

farm families were gathering
around their dinner tables, giving
thanks that they lived on these
great plains where the sky had
room to spread its blush from
one horizon to the other, with
night descending as softly as
the dew into every furrow on
the land.
