ONE NIGHT AT WALDEN

Walden was aglow tonight,
and I felt like saying, "Dim
those lights, will ya!" as the
full Hunter moon peeled back
the black and fitted us each with
night vision goggles, allowing
us to see how it was, and this
is how it was: all was hung in
suspension in some vast solution:
the solid earth, the moon, Mars
by its side, the pond, us sitting
on that stonewall high above the
rippling mirror, with stars
skittering like lightning bugs
across silver-plated waves.

All was suspended one night at
at Walden, until the sun rose,
and with its rays came terre
firma.
Then we rose to walk
down ancient paths.
