Like the grandees of Newport
clinging to their rocky cliffs,
this new New Hampshire gentry
becometh lords of the manor,
dubbing their nobly-titled estates,
Fairstead,
Rockfern,
Grey Court,
Clear Water,
Harbor Breeze,
as they sit on sweeping porches,
amid boathouses, along a shore's edge,
to gaze upon waters once named by
those ingnorant of ownership
and the staking of claims.
Make way for Sunapee! Lake of the Wild Goose!
– a name mysterious enough to endure,
deeded only by the pine trees.
